Maggie, don't sweat it. Playing backup or rhythym(spll?) for Bluegrass is pretty straightforward. It's the lead work that's hard. Keep it simple. Focus on timing and a steady attack. There are no drums in Bluegrass, so the guitar's rythym is important. Everybody playing with you will know you're new to this, so just relax and follow along. Pay attention to the changes. Once you go through the first verse/chorus, just remember that progression and repeat. Good luck, and more important, have fun! I have found that playing in church is great fun. For the most part, there is not as much pressure to be "perfect". Folks are more accepting, and the focus is not as much on how great a player you are and more on Who it is you're playing for. Relax and enjoy yourself. Plus, you've got 3-4 months to get familiar, so you should be fine. It's not rocket science. As far as the Martin goes, it's the traditional Bluegrass "weapon", but the folks at the church aren't going to be as hidebound about the kind of guitar you use as your local Bluegrass jam might be. If they are, they've forgotten their purpose.
