I think we've got some very good musicians and guitarists here in this forum, and hopefully some of them will contribute here in this thread.
I don't play guitar, so I can't help you with that (I bet you can't guess what instrument I play |

I don't read music so my input probly ain't whatcha want, really, but that never stopped me before...
Tap your foot four times per one measure of a song written in 4/4 time. A note that falls on each footfall is a quarter note. A note that takes two taps is a half note. A note that rings throughout all four taps is a whole note. Rudimentary, I know. But then I'm a self-taught idiot too! Erik www.lulu.com/weriker |

Thanks everyone. Ethel, no I do not know music theory. However, I have therorized I'd like to learn it so does that count??
Aztec, thanks that does help. I am tapping my foot as I write this trying to hope in a few minutes I go: Crap, I think I understand! Still tapping |

To be perfectly honest, most guitarists will find both reading music and music theory to be mostly useless pursuits that are modestly interesting for about 45 minutes. There's simply no real practical advantage unless you're working toward being a session-type player or jazzer.
If you really insist on it, I recommend the Leavitt guitar method from Berklee (berkleepress.com). It includes the full range of practical application like moveable chord forms and the CAGED system. |

Looks like AztecRiker has given you a really good lesson in music theory, Lonny (as it pertains to timing). I don't think I could have explained it anywhere near as effectively as he did. Do you have enough to get started or do you need more information?
