Your mom might be interested in becoming a member of Pre-Paid Legal now that you'll be getting your driver's license. Back in 2002 or 2003, Arch found this company somehow (advertisement or something), and he decided it would be good for us to sign up because we had some legal issues we needed to deal with. The membership made it possible for us to do it for hundreds of dollars less than what we would have had to pay without the membership. After a year or so, we let the membership lapse because we didn't think we needed it any more. Two or three years ago, Arch got a speeding ticket at a speed trap in another state, and it would have cost us a lot of money because he already had been nabbed at a couple of speed traps, and this third ticket would have caused a suspension of his license, which would have made it impossible for him to make a living, since he makes his living on the road. We joined up again, and they got the ticket reduced so that his license wouldn't be suspended. Also, because of that, we didn't have to pay around $600 extra on our car insurance. We would have been able to have this done for free had we been members before Arch got the ticket. Since he already had the ticket when we re-joined, we got a 25% discount on the attorney fees.

They've also saved us a lot of money on other matters, and also made life easier in other ways. We had our wills done for free through our provider attorney's office. Also, I had a company that was harassing me over a disputed bill from several years ago, which had already been resolved, but the company had sold my name to a collection agency anyway. I called my Pre-Paid Legal provider attorney's office, and they sent a letter to the company that was harassing me, and I've never heard from them again. We also send documents and contracts to the attorney's office, and they tell us whether or not we should sign or whatever. We just recently had a problem with a mortgage broker here in our city who was not being honest with us. When Arch started questioning some of the inconsistencies, the broker decided to terminate the business relationship, and they did it in a way that would reflect badly on our credit rating. We called our provider attorney's office, and they are dealing with that matter for us. They did all of these things for free.

They've also helped us with a lot of other things that we just needed to ask an attorney about, some of them related to our business. We can have free consultations with our provider attorneys on an unlimited number of issues.

Another thing they do, but that we haven't had to use, is if either of us ever gets arrested or sued, our provider attorneys will provide a certain number of hours of representation for free, and if we require any more than that, they will provide it for a 25% discount. Hopefully we'll never need to use that one, but it's nice to know it's there just in case.

We're also in the process of signing up for the identity theft protection. The thing that's good about this ID theft protection is that they don't just monitor your identity for people trying to steal it, they also will repair your identity if it gets stolen. They will alert you to a problem before it becomes big enough to cause a large amount of damage also, and put a stop to it. This may sound like something that most people wouldn't need, but that's no longer the case. A lot of people (and the number is growing rapidly) are having the experience of their identity being stolen.
